This is the full developer documentation for Passion
# Passion for developers
> Connect AI assistants, scripts and tools to your Passion Apps.
Passion gives you two ways to work with your Apps from outside Passion:
* **The Passion MCP** at `https://api.passion.io/mcp`. An AI assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Claude Code connects to it and gets tools to read your App and act on it.
* **The Passion API** at `https://api.passion.io/v1`. A REST API for scripts and automation tools.
Both use the same permissions and the same checks. A change made with the MCP is the same as a change made with the API.
## Start
[Section titled “Start”](#start)
To use an AI assistant, connect it and sign in with your Passion account. You choose the Apps it can use and whether it can only read or can also make changes:
* [Claude](/guides/connect-claude/), on claude.ai or Claude Desktop.
* [ChatGPT](/guides/connect-chatgpt/), on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu.
* [Claude Code](/guides/claude-code/), with one command.
For a script or another client, [get an API key](/guides/api-keys/), then connect [any MCP client](/guides/mcp/) or call [the REST API](/api/) with `curl` or any HTTP library.
## Reference
[Section titled “Reference”](#reference)
* [MCP tools](/mcp/tools/): every tool, what it needs and what it returns.
* [REST API reference](/api/): every route, from the OpenAPI document. The document itself is at [`/openapi.json`](/openapi.json).
* [Scopes](/guides/scopes/), [versioning](/guides/versioning/) and [errors](/guides/errors/).
## For AI agents
[Section titled “For AI agents”](#for-ai-agents)
Every guide and the MCP tool reference is also available as Markdown: add `.md` to its path, for example [`/guides/api-keys.md`](/guides/api-keys.md). For the REST API, read the OpenAPI document at [`/openapi.json`](/openapi.json). [`/llms.txt`](/llms.txt) lists the documentation sets, and [`/llms-full.txt`](/llms-full.txt) holds the guides and the tool reference in one file.
# API keys
> What an API key is, what it can reach, and how to send it.
An API key lets a script or an AI assistant act on your Apps as you. Every request to the Passion API and the Passion MCP needs one.
## What a key is
[Section titled “What a key is”](#what-a-key-is)
* A key starts with `psn_key_`, for example `psn_key_3fJk…`.
* A key reaches only the Apps you chose for it. A request about another App is refused, even when you own that App.
* A key is **read** or **full**. A read key can only read. A full key can also make changes, such as publishing a community post. See [Scopes](/guides/scopes/).
* No key can delete anything or move money.
* You see the key once, when it is created. Passion keeps only a hash of it, so nobody at Passion can show it to you again. If you lose it, get a new one.
* Passion records when the key was last used, and every change it made.
## Get a key
[Section titled “Get a key”](#get-a-key)
Creating keys yourself in Passion Studio is coming soon.
Until then, ask Passion support for a key. Tell them:
1. a name for the key, for example “Claude Code on my laptop”;
2. the Apps the key must reach;
3. read or full access. Choose read unless the tool must make changes.
## Send the key
[Section titled “Send the key”](#send-the-key)
Send the key in the `Authorization` header of every request:
```http
Authorization: Bearer psn_key_…
```
For example:
```sh
curl https://api.passion.io/v1/apps/12345/overview \
-H "Authorization: Bearer psn_key_…"
```
A request with no key, an unknown key or a revoked key gets `401` with the code `unknown_key`. See [Errors](/guides/errors/).
## Keep the key safe
[Section titled “Keep the key safe”](#keep-the-key-safe)
* Treat the key like a password. Do not put it in a file that you share or commit.
* Use a different key for each tool, so you can stop one tool without stopping the others.
* If a key leaks, ask Passion support to revoke it. A revoked key stops working on the next request.
# Claude Code
> Connect Claude Code to your Passion Apps with one command.
Claude Code connects to the Passion MCP in one of two ways:
* **Sign in with your Passion account.** Best when you use Claude Code yourself.
* **An API key.** Best for a script, a CI job or a shared machine, where nobody can sign in in a browser.
[Claude Code](https://code.claude.com/docs) must be installed.
## Connect with sign-in
[Section titled “Connect with sign-in”](#connect-with-sign-in)
1. Run this command:
```sh
claude mcp add --transport http passion https://api.passion.io/mcp
```
To use Passion in every project, add `--scope user` after `add`.
2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. Choose `passion` and follow the steps. Your browser opens a Passion page.
3. If you are not signed in to Passion Studio, sign in.
4. Tick the Apps Claude Code may use. Choose **Read only** or **Full access**, then click **Allow**.
5. Go back to Claude Code. `/mcp` shows `passion` as connected.
Passion asks for these choices each time you sign in. To sign out, choose **Clear authentication** for `passion` in `/mcp`, or revoke Claude Code in Passion Studio under **Settings › Integrations › Connected apps**.
## Connect with an API key
[Section titled “Connect with an API key”](#connect-with-an-api-key)
You need an API key that starts with `psn_key_`. See [API keys](/guides/api-keys/). A read key is enough to ask questions; a full key also lets Claude Code make changes, such as posting to a community.
1. Run this command. Put your key in place of `psn_key_…`:
```sh
claude mcp add --transport http passion https://api.passion.io/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer psn_key_…"
```
This adds the server for the current project, on your computer only. To use Passion in every project, add `--scope user` after `add`.
Do not use `--scope project`. It writes the key into `.mcp.json`, a file that is usually committed and shared.
2. Start Claude Code and type `/mcp`. The list shows `passion` as connected.
3. Ask a question, for example:
> Give me an overview of my App.
Claude Code calls the `get_app_overview` tool and answers.
## Make changes
[Section titled “Make changes”](#make-changes)
With full access, Claude Code can also use the tools that make changes, for example `post_to_community`. Claude Code asks for your permission before it runs a Passion tool, unless you allowed that tool before. Read what it will post before you agree.
## Remove the connection
[Section titled “Remove the connection”](#remove-the-connection)
```sh
claude mcp remove passion
```
This removes the server, and the sign-in or the key, from Claude Code. A key still works until you revoke it in Passion Studio.
## When it does not connect
[Section titled “When it does not connect”](#when-it-does-not-connect)
| You see | Do this |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `401` or “The API key is missing, unknown or revoked.” | With a key: check that the header is exactly `Authorization: Bearer psn_key_…`, with no extra spaces or quotes. With sign-in: in `/mcp`, choose `passion` and sign in again. |
| A tool says “This key does not give access to this App.” | The key or the sign-in does not reach that App. Get a key for it, or sign in again and tick it. |
| No tool that makes changes | You have read access. Get a full key, or sign in again and choose **Full access**. |
| “This sign-in has expired. Start it again from the app.” | Start the sign-in again from `/mcp`. Finish in the same browser. |
# Connect ChatGPT
> Add Passion to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server, and sign in with your Passion account.
ChatGPT connects to Passion with your Passion account. You do not need an API key.
## Before you start
[Section titled “Before you start”](#before-you-start)
* You use ChatGPT **Business**, **Enterprise** or **Edu**. Other ChatGPT plans cannot add a custom MCP server.
* On Business, only workspace admins and owners can add one. On Enterprise and Edu, admins can also give the permission **Create plugins with MCPs** to other members.
* You use ChatGPT on the web, at [chatgpt.com](https://chatgpt.com). The ChatGPT mobile apps cannot add a custom MCP server.
* You own a Passion App and can sign in to Passion Studio.
## Connect
[Section titled “Connect”](#connect)
1. Go to [**Plugins**](https://chatgpt.com/plugins) in ChatGPT.
2. Click the **+** button, then **Add custom MCP server**.
3. For the name, enter `Passion`.
4. Under **Connection**, for the server URL, enter:
```text
https://api.passion.io/mcp/chatgpt
```
This is ChatGPT’s own Passion address. It has every Passion tool except the three general tools that search and run any API operation, which ChatGPT does not allow.
5. For authentication, choose **OAuth**.
6. Read the risk warning and tick **I understand and want to continue**.
7. Click **Create as a plugin**. When ChatGPT asks you to sign in, a Passion page opens.
8. If you are not signed in to Passion Studio, sign in.
9. The page asks you to connect ChatGPT to Passion:
* Under **Apps ChatGPT can use**, tick the Apps ChatGPT may use.
* Under **What ChatGPT can do**, choose **Read only** (ChatGPT sees your App’s data and changes nothing) or **Full access** (ChatGPT can also make changes, such as posting to a community).
10. Click **Allow**. You go back to ChatGPT. It shows the Passion tools it found.
11. Install the Passion plugin.
When Passion can confirm the request comes from ChatGPT, the page shows a **Verified** mark. If the page warns that Passion can’t confirm who made the app, and you did not just start this from ChatGPT, click **Deny**.
To give Passion to your whole workspace, an admin or owner publishes it. See OpenAI’s article below.
## Use it
[Section titled “Use it”](#use-it)
Start a new chat, type `@`, and choose **Passion**. Then ask, for example:
> Give me an overview of my App.
Choosing Passion applies to one message. Type `@Passion` again when a later question needs new data from Passion.
Before ChatGPT runs a tool that makes changes, it can ask you. Read what it will do before you agree.
## Disconnect
[Section titled “Disconnect”](#disconnect)
* **In Passion Studio:** open **Settings › Integrations**. Under **Connected apps**, click **Revoke** next to ChatGPT. ChatGPT can no longer reach your App.
* **In ChatGPT:** remove the Passion plugin from [**Plugins**](https://chatgpt.com/plugins).
To change the Apps or the access, revoke the connection in Studio, then connect again from ChatGPT.
## When it does not work
[Section titled “When it does not work”](#when-it-does-not-work)
| You see | Do this |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| No **Add custom MCP server** | Your plan or your workspace role does not allow it. Ask your workspace admin. |
| “This sign-in has expired. Start it again from the app.” | Start again in ChatGPT. Finish in the same browser. |
| “You have no App to connect yet.” | Create your App in Passion Studio first. |
| “Staff can’t connect apps for a creator.” | Only the App’s creator can connect it. Sign in as the creator. |

# Errors
> The one error shape of the REST API, its types and codes, and how the MCP reports errors.
## The REST error shape
[Section titled “The REST error shape”](#the-rest-error-shape)
Every REST error has the same body:
```json
{
"error": {
"type": "authentication_error",
"code": "unknown_key",
"message": "The API key is missing, unknown or revoked.",
"requestId": "01a135cb-0fae-746c-bc27-a0a912c82989"
}
}
```
* `type` is the kind of error. Branch on it, or on `code`.
* `code` is the exact reason. It never changes for the same reason.
* `message` is for people. It can change; do not parse it.
* `requestId` is the same value as the `x-correlation-id` response header. Give it to Passion support when you ask about a request.
## Types and codes
[Section titled “Types and codes”](#types-and-codes)
| Status | `type` | `code` | When |
| ------ | ----------------------- | ---------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 400 | `invalid_request_error` | `invalid_input` | The input is not valid, for example an empty title. |
| 400 | `invalid_request_error` | `unknown_version` | The `Passion-Version` header names a version that does not exist. |
| 401 | `authentication_error` | `unknown_key` | The key is missing, unknown or revoked. |
| 403 | `permission_error` | `app_not_granted` | The key does not reach this App. |
| 403 | `permission_error` | `write_scope_required` | A read key asked for a change. |
| 500 | `api_error` | `internal_error` | Something failed on our side. Try again later. |
A refused request changes nothing. A path that is not a route gets a plain `404` without this body.
## Errors in the MCP
[Section titled “Errors in the MCP”](#errors-in-the-mcp)
* A request without a working key gets HTTP `401` and a JSON-RPC error with the code `-32001`.
* A tool call that is refused, for example about an App the key does not reach, returns a tool result with `isError: true`. Its text is the same message that the REST API gives.
* A request from a web page on another site gets `403`.
* A method other than `POST` gets `405`.
# Connect any MCP client
> The Passion MCP endpoint, how clients sign in, the protocol versions it speaks, and what the token decides.
Use this page for any other MCP client. For Claude Code, Claude and ChatGPT, follow [Claude Code](/guides/claude-code/), [Connect Claude](/guides/connect-claude/) or [Connect ChatGPT](/guides/connect-chatgpt/).
## Endpoint
[Section titled “Endpoint”](#endpoint)
| | |
| --------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| URL | `https://api.passion.io/mcp`, or `https://api.passion.io/mcp/chatgpt` for ChatGPT |
| Transport | Streamable HTTP, `POST` only |
| Header | `Authorization: Bearer `: an API key `psn_key_…` ([API keys](/guides/api-keys/)) or an OAuth access token |
There are no sessions. The token on each request decides everything, so every request must carry it.
`/mcp/chatgpt` has the same tools and checks as `/mcp`, except `api_search`, `api_read` and `api_write`. It is its own OAuth resource: its protected resource metadata is at `https://api.passion.io/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp/chatgpt`, and a sign-in for one address does not work on the other. An API key works on both.
## Sign in with OAuth
[Section titled “Sign in with OAuth”](#sign-in-with-oauth)
A client that supports MCP authorization can let the creator sign in with their Passion account instead of using a key.
| | |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Protected resource metadata | `https://api.passion.io/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp` |
| Authorization server metadata | `https://api.passion.io/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server` |
| Client registration | Dynamic client registration at `https://api.passion.io/oauth/reg`, or a client ID metadata document |
| Grant | Authorization code with PKCE (`S256` only), then refresh tokens |
| Resource | `https://api.passion.io/mcp` (send it as `resource`) |
| Scopes | `read`, or `read write` for full access |
| Redirect URI | HTTPS, an app scheme, or `http://localhost` on any port |
A request without a token gets `401` with `WWW-Authenticate: Bearer resource_metadata="https://api.passion.io/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp"`, so a client can find the rest by itself.
The creator signs in to Passion Studio, picks the Apps and **Read only** or **Full access**, and can revoke the connection later in **Settings › Integrations › Connected apps**. A client that asks for `read` only cannot get full access.
## Protocol versions
[Section titled “Protocol versions”](#protocol-versions)
| Version | Support |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| `2026-07-28` | Yes. No session and no `initialize` call are needed. |
| `2025-11-25` | Yes. |
| `2025-06-18` | Yes. |
## What the token decides
[Section titled “What the token decides”](#what-the-token-decides)
* **Tools.** A read key or read access lists only the tools that read. Full access also lists the tools that make changes. See [Scopes](/guides/scopes/).
* **Apps.** When the token reaches one App, no tool asks for an App. When it reaches several Apps, every tool has an `appId` argument, and its description lists the App ids the token reaches.
The tool list is private to the token. Do not cache it for another token.
## Tool results
[Section titled “Tool results”](#tool-results)
* Each tool says whether it only reads (`readOnlyHint`). A tool that makes changes is marked, so the client can ask you before it runs. A tool that deletes, replaces content or sends something members see is marked destructive (`destructiveHint`). No tool moves money.
* A tool returns `structuredContent`, and the same JSON as text.
* A tool returns the same data as the matching [REST route](/api/), and goes through the same checks.
The full list is in [MCP tools](/mcp/tools/).
## Browsers
[Section titled “Browsers”](#browsers)
A request sent from a web page on another site is refused with `403`. Call the MCP from a server or from a local client, not from a browser page.
## Errors
[Section titled “Errors”](#errors)
See [Errors in the MCP](/guides/errors/#errors-in-the-mcp).
# Scopes
> What a read key and a full key may do.
Every key has one scope. The scope decides what the key may do in the Apps it reaches.
| Scope | May read | May make changes | Shown as |
| ------- | -------- | ---------------- | -------- |
| `read` | yes | no | read key |
| `write` | yes | yes | full key |
## What a read key gets
[Section titled “What a read key gets”](#what-a-read-key-gets)
* In the REST API, a request that makes a change is refused with `403` and the code `write_scope_required`. Nothing changes.
* In the MCP, the tools that make changes are not listed at all. The assistant sees only the tools that read.
To make changes, use a full key. A read key cannot be upgraded.
## What no scope allows
[Section titled “What no scope allows”](#what-no-scope-allows)
No key can delete anything or move money. There are no routes or tools for that.
## Apps
[Section titled “Apps”](#apps)
The scope works together with the Apps the key reaches. A request about an App that the key does not reach is refused with `403` and the code `app_not_granted`, whatever the scope.
Each [MCP tool](/mcp/tools/) and each [REST route](/api/) says which scope it needs.
# Versioning
> How the Passion-Version header pins the REST API version.
The REST API has a version named by a date. The current version is `2026-10-07`.
## Pin the version
[Section titled “Pin the version”](#pin-the-version)
Send the `Passion-Version` header to say which version your code expects:
```sh
curl https://api.passion.io/v1/apps/12345/overview \
-H "Authorization: Bearer psn_key_…" \
-H "Passion-Version: 2026-10-07"
```
* Every REST response has a `Passion-Version` header with the version it answers with.
* When you do not send the header, you get the current version.
* When you send a version that does not exist, the request is refused with `400` and the code `unknown_version`. The message names the current version.
## What changes a version
[Section titled “What changes a version”](#what-changes-a-version)
* **Additive changes keep the version.** A new route, a new optional input field or a new field in a response does not change the date. Write your code so that it ignores fields it does not know.
* **Breaking changes get a new date.** Removing or renaming a field, or changing what a field means, gets a new version.
## The MCP
[Section titled “The MCP”](#the-mcp)
The version header is for the REST API. MCP clients agree on the MCP protocol version when they connect; see [MCP](/guides/mcp/).
# MCP tools
> Every tool the Passion MCP offers, what it needs and what it returns.
A connection with a read key lists only the read tools. A connection to more than one App adds an `appId` argument to every tool that acts on one App. ChatGPT connects at `/mcp/chatgpt`, which lists every tool except the ones under “Any API operation”.
## Apps
### `list_apps` — List Apps
Lists the Apps this connection reaches: for each App its id, name, web address and number of live subscriptions. Every other tool asks for one of these App ids.
* Needs a read key.
* Read only: yes. Destructive: no.
* Listed only when the connection covers more than one App.
Input:
```json
{
"$schema": "https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema",
### `get_app_overview` — Get App overview
Shows what each part of the App has: its name and web address, whether a look and an icon are set, which parts of the Home page have content, how many courses are published and how many are drafts, how many offers are on sale, how many subscriptions are live per offer and how many started and ended in the last 30 days, its communities with their ids, member counts and channel ids (post\_to\_community needs them), and whether the App has an Assistant. Call it first in every run. It reports what the App has; you decide with the creator what to build next.
* Needs a read key.
* Read only: yes. Destructive: no.
### `get_app_branding` — Get App branding
Shows how the App presents itself to members: its name, web address and support email, the look options of the Design page, the colors by role, the font, the corner style, the logo and icon addresses, the tabs with their titles and icons, and what leads the Home page. Read it before you suggest a new name, look or icon, so you start from what the creator has.
* Needs a read key.
* Read only: yes. Destructive: no.
### `create_course` — Create a course
Creates a draft course with a name, a summary, an optional cover image and an optional outline: sections, each with its lessons (name and summary). Members do not see a draft course. Answers the ids of the course, its sections and its lessons. The lessons have no blocks yet: add them with add\_lesson\_block. The plan of the App can limit the number of courses; then nothing is created. If the call fails after the course exists, the course keeps the sections and lessons created so far: find it with list\_courses, read it with get\_course, and add the missing lessons with create\_lesson. No tool adds a section to an existing course. Show the creator the name and the outline, and ask before you create it.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: no.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: yes.
## Files
### `create_upload` — Upload a file
Gives a place to upload one file (video, image, audio or document) and the id of that file. Then send the file yourself: a multipart/form-data POST to upload.url with every field of upload.fields first, then a field “Content-Type” with the MIME type, then the file last in a field “file”. For example: curl -F key=… -F policy=… -F Content-Type=video/mp4 -F file=@lesson.mp4 \. After the upload, a lesson block takes the file id.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: no.
### `create_community` — Create a community
Creates a community in the App: a name, an optional summary, and whether members can send direct messages to the creator and to each other (both off unless you say so). The creator sets the cover in Studio. The community starts with no channels: open them with create\_channel. No offer gives access to it yet; an offer names the communities it includes. The plan of the App can limit the number of communities; then nothing is created. Read get\_app\_overview first: the App may already have a community to change with update\_community. Show the creator the name, the summary and the messaging choices, and ask before you create it.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: no.
Input:
### `update_community` — Change a community
Changes the name, the summary, or whether members can send direct messages to the creator and to each other. Always give the name: the current one, as get\_app\_overview lists it, to keep it. Give only the other fields to change; the rest keep their value. Members see the change at once. Show the creator the change, and ask before you make it.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: yes.
Input:
### `create_channel` — Create a channel
Opens a new channel in one community of the App, with a name and an optional description. A channel is where members post. Find the community id, and the channels it already has, with get\_app\_overview. Show the creator the name, the description and the community, and ask before you create it.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: no.
## Home page
### `get_home` — Get the Home page
Reads the Home page of the App, the page a visitor sees first: the tagline, the cover, the story, the highlights, the testimonials, the questions, the order and visibility of the sections, the offers on the plan card, whether visitors can browse, and the members-only line. Each picture has its file id and its current address. Read it before set\_home, which replaces the whole page.
* Needs a read key.
### `set_home` — Set the Home page
Replaces the whole Home page of the App with what you send: the tagline, the cover, the story, the highlights, the testimonials, the questions, the order and visibility of the sections, the offers on the plan card, whether visitors can browse, and the members-only line. A part you leave empty is removed, so read get\_home first and send back what stays. Every picture is a file id from create\_upload, uploaded by this creator; an address is not accepted. Offer ids come from list\_offers; an id that is not an offer on sale is skipped, not refused. Testimonials are what the creator’s members said: use only quotes you found in the creator’s own source, word for word, with the name given there. Never write a testimonial yourself. Visitors see the change at once. Show the creator the page, and ask before you save it.
* Needs a write key.
* Read only: no. Destructive: yes.
## Assistant
### `get_assistant` — Get the Assistant
Reads the App’s Assistant, the AI that members chat with: its name, the address of its picture, whether it speaks with the creator’s own voice, and its welcome message. An App without an Assistant answers a tool error that says so: the Assistant comes with a You AI plan.
* Needs a read key.
* Read only: yes. Destructive: no.
Input:
```json
{
"$schema": "https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema",

### `update_assistant` — Update the Assistant
Changes the name and the welcome message of the App’s Assistant, the AI that members chat with. Send only what changes; the rest stays. The picture and the voice are set in Studio. Show the creator the new name and message, and ask before you save them.
* Needs a write key.
